This year’s Suffolk Yacht Harbour Classic Regatta is set to be a spectacular festival of classic boats afloat. Despite ongoing Covid restrictions, the regatta will take place from 25th – 27th June with adjustments to the shoreside scene.

Photo credit: Chrissie Westgate The regatta kick starts with an informal Friday evening fleet race in the river to shake off the working week and make the most of time on the water. Berthing is being organised by the SYH team, with several boats rafted up beside and in front of the Haven Ports Yacht Club (HPYC) lightship to enhance the outdoor festival atmosphere. The SYH team will be on hand to assist with and allocate berthing; contact the team via the details below. If you are rafted up, don’t forget the courtesy rule of crossing another boat in front of the mast. Saturday morning will see staggered, individual briefings outside the Harbour Room for the Slow, Stella and Fast classes; see programme below for timings. Bacon sandwiches, coffees and teas will be served al fresco adjacent to the Harbour Room (opposite the HPYC lightship) as takeaways on both Saturday and Sunday. The first race of the three-part regatta series starts at 10.40am on Saturday, with yachts remaining out on the water for the afternoon race, so pack your picnics. Sailing instructions for the regatta series and the separate Friday evening race can be found via the links below. Please advise the berthing office if you need a tow out of the marina to the safe water mark in the channel. For the first year in the regatta’s history, classic motorboats will join the event, gathering at SYH on Saturday morning. Between the finish of the first and the start of the second sailing yacht race, motorboats will have a standing start off the race committee boat line, with a course to navigate whilst under drone footage.

The regatta social programme has been adapted into a rafting party to deliver a true celebration of beautiful classic sail and motor yachts.
The HPYC bar will be open for food and drinks throughout the weekend, within the current Covid guidelines. Tables for food or drinks must be pre-booked via dining@hpyc.com. Takeaway drinks cannot be taken from the bar to your boats, so stock your fridges and cool bags with post-racing refreshments.
On Saturday, live music will be played out over the marina as the sun goes down and a pop-up pizza oven will serve freshly cooked pizzas to eat at the outdoor seating or to take onboard your boats.
Entrants are invited to dress their yachts with flags, embrace the festival atmosphere and admire the boats on show. Complimentary beers and gin and tonics will be delivered to each entry; please do decorate your boat so the team can see where you are and deliver the drinks! Sunday will see the final race of the series followed by prize giving for sail and motor yachts. Prize giving will be done via microphone from the HPYC lightship whilst you all enjoy a drink or two from the comfort of your boats. We have given careful consideration to the format of the regatta to deliver a balance of a safe, secure event, with on the water action and the camaraderie we have all missed so much. Whilst the regatta will feel relaxed and sociable, please be mindful of the 1m+ social distancing rule throughout the weekend, especially on the pontoons, and avoid gathering in large groups. Online communication will be our friend in the lead up to and during the regatta, so keep an eye on www.syhclassicregatta.co.uk, the SYH Facebook and Instagram pages, and your emails. A WhatsApp group will be set up on Friday afternoon for the duration of the regatta; please contact us via the details below if you do not want to be added to the group. We are looking forward to seeing you all for a much-needed weekend on the water.
